What’s Cooking?
There is just something about the winter months that gets me in the cooking mood. I got up this morning and made up my mind that today was going to be a Chicken Paprikash day.
If you have teenagers, this is a terrific dish to make together. In an age when everything comes in a package, it’s especially refreshing to take the time to make a dish totally from scratch. Well, if you grow your own chickens it would be absolutely from scratch from start to finish. Otherwise you will just have to settle for picking your chicken up at your local market.
I am a personal fan of Spaetzle noodles, so I like to make them from scratch and purchased a Spaetzel-Dumpling maker, which aren’t really that cheap to buy at around $25.00. You don’t have to let the cost stop you from making them. Most stores carry a boxed version of Spaetzle noodles and while I haven’t personally tried them, they will probably work nicely.
Alternatively, you can create a close second using a couple of spoons to drop the dough into the boiling water. Using a large tablespoon, scoop up a spoon full of dough and use a teaspoon to cut and drop the tiny noodles into the boiling water. This seems very time consuming to me but my son assures me it’s not that bad. He makes Spaetzle noodles this way a couple times a year. It sounds like a great deal of work to me.
If you have been looking for a Spaetzle maker and have had trouble finding one. You can read about my attempts to locate one and find details on how to order your very own Spaetzle maker online. Read The Spaetzle Maker Saga.
Note: When allowing the kids to help be certain to watch them closely around the boiling water, which can severely burn the skin.
